It is a pleasure to introduce to English readers a book which has had a marked success in its French from as "La Langue Turque". It may be fairly said that this book is the first to present in a practical manner a really sound approach to oral and written Turkish. The adaption of the phonetic alphabet in 1929 greatly simplified the learning of Turkish for foreigners, hitherto discouraged by the Arabic script. The policy of ridding the language of the many words and expressions of Arabic and Persian origin also renders it essential for the English reader to have a book which is completely up - to - date and does in fact set forth the "Turkish of Today". Other books, now outmoded, teach words and phrases which are no longer current. This little book admirably blends the direct and the combined methods. From the very first lesson the vocabulary of everyday life is employed. At the same time Bay İzzet Hamit Ün contrives to introduce very skillfully and unobtrusively the essential grammatical rules. The appearance of this book will, I am sure, be welcomed by many English people at a time when the countries of Great Britain and Turkey are more closely knit by friendship than at any other time in history.
