This new dictionary contains over 6,000 entries of common English words and expressions. It is designed to help overseas Chinese and non-Chinese readers to learn Chinese. It will also be of use for Chinese students learning English. There are two special features that make the book distinguished and the first of its kind. First, all definitions are given in simplified Chinese characters with their original unsimplified forms shown in parentheses. This means that people who know either form of the characters can make use of it and they can also learn one form from the other. Secondly, following the Chinese definitions are their Latinized Chinese phonetic (pinyin) symbols. This enables the user to pronounce the characters correctly. We have included as appendixes a table of the Chinese phonetic alphabet, a table of the consonants and vowels of the Chinese phonetic alphabet with other phonetic symbols listed in contrast, a table of the combinations of the initials and ımals in common speech, a brief Chinese chronological table, and a table of weights and measures.
