THE Oxford Turkish-English Dictionary and English-Turkish Dictionary have both had great success but, because of their size and cost; they could not satisfactorily meet the demand for a first class dictionary suitable for school and university pupils. So this abridgement has been prepared, reducing the originals to about one-third of their length.
This economy of material has been achieved only by the careful rearrangement of entries and the elimination of dose synonyms, such geographical and scientific terms as should be easily recognizable, and those Arabic and Persian forms now commonly replaced by Turkish ones. Further, no new material has been added. It has thus been possible to retain the wealth of idiom which is the essential characteristic of the larger volumes.
The chief innovation is that the pronunciation of English words is now shown in terms of the modern Turkish alphabet rather than by the use of phonetic symbols.
We should like to take this opportunity to thank Mr. H. C. Hony for allowing us to condense the original material and for his cooperation in the preparation of this volume. Our thanks are also due to the Delegates and staff of the Clarendon Press for their encouragement and advice.
