Music Publishing is a very long established business in Europe and the Americas with several companies claiming a history exceeding 200 years; the London office of Chappell for example owns correspondence with Beethoven. It is thus a business with roots far older than the recording or broadcasting industries. Even if today these generate much of its income.
In Turkey the business is a much more recent development and the purpose of this book is to give Turkish songwriters, composers and lyricists an understanding of what music publishing is about and how music publishers can serve them.
In short the business of music publishing is about developing the talent of the songwriter, improving his music, ensuring his music is recorded by artists and beneficially exploited so far as possible, including if possible [and if approved by the songwriter] by means of local language versions in foreign countries using the publishers network of contacts and sub publishers; and licensing resultant uses together with collecting resultant income either directly or via collective rights management societies, and accounting for this to the songwriter.
