Since the first Expo back in 1851. held in the renowned Crystal Palace in London, the Sites of World’s Fairs or Universal Expositions have become a point of focus not only for the development of industry, international trade and cultural relations, but also for the promotion of creativity in environmental and architectural production. Hence, for the 2010 Shanghai Exposition, a team with experience in a wide range of fields was brought together to develop the general concept, the specific display themes and the exterior design of the Turkish Pavilion Scholars from the fields of history, architecture, city planning, archeology and the arts, combined their talents to generate and represent unique ideas for the international event.
It was our intention that the main concept of the architectural project for the Turkish Pavilion, which started out as an existing Expo container and was transformed into a distinctive display environment, be based upon the general theme of Expo Shanghai: "Better City. Better Life". The pavilion was a relatively small building that was required to take on a very large task and a loaded architectural pregram, in particular, the facade, which formed a 3D skin around the existing container.
