The Swedish Minister Resident in Constantinople during the years 1824-1827, Cari Gustaf Löwenhielm (1790-1858), was not only a distinguished civil servant and military officer, but also a talented artist with an intimate feeling for the landscape and the architecture. The University Library of Uppsala has a collection of his drawings and water-colours of which there are more than 150 with Turkish motives. Some of Löwenhielm's works depicting motives especially from Constantinople are also hanging in the Embassy of Sweden in Ankara and in the General Consulate of Sweden in Istanbul. On the suggestion of the present Swedish ambassador in Turkey, H.E. Mr. Erik Corneli, the Uppsala University Library and the Museum of Mediterranean and Near Eastern Antiquities, Medelhavsmuseet, in Stockholm have arranged an exhibition of some 75 selected works by Löwenhielm. The exhibition will be shown in Stockholm, Uppsala, Ankara and Istanbul, thus stressing the cultural cooperation between Sweden and Turkey. The commissioners of the exhibition have been Dr. Margareta Lindgren (Uppsala) and Curator Suzanne Unge Sörling and Dr. Karin Adahl (Stockholm). Löwenhielm's paintings have not only an artistic value but are also of great topographical and historical interest. As can be seeing the exhibition and in this catalogue it is also possible to follow in Löwenhielm's footsteps and compare his motives with modern photos.
