This guide contains relevant information compiled on architectural structures built in Istanbul from the Byzantine era to the present, and it is divided according to the geographical areas of Istanbul, namely Historic Peninsula (Vol. 1) containing 328 structures, Galata (Vol. 2) containing 215 structures, Bosphorus and the Asian Side (Vol. 3) containing 275 structures, and Modern and Contemporary (Vol. 4) containing 214 structures. The governing factor in the selection of structures was based on the prerequisite that they are still standing and can be visited, and the guide is of inventory quality.
Articles and maps on Istanbul's urban development, conservation areas, transport network and street pattern included in the introduction of the Volume I will assist in familiarizing with the city.
There are articles by experts elucidating the regions and the periods at the beginning of each volume.
The section explaining the structures incorporates 1:10000 scale fold-out maps. The maps were composed by dividing Istanbul's metropolitan area into a grid of 2x3 km. Each 1: 10000 scale map was the n divided into squares of 500 sq.km. to facilitate easy identification of the structures on the map. Since the maps were developed from aerial photographs, the color scheme reflects the roof view of the structures.
In the first 3 volumes, the structures are numbered according to their locations and the grid on the map. Different colors on the maps indicate the period in which the structure was built. The Eastern Roman Empire is designated by purple, Early Ottoman by yellow, Classical Ottoman by green, Late Ottoman by blue. On the maps of the first 3 volumes the Modern structures described in Volume 4 have no numbers and are colored dark gray. On the maps in the 4th Volume only, the Modern and Contemporary structures are red, the others are dark gray. Relevant captions are found on the cover of each map.
The pages of the structures section contain photographs, drawings and short texts......
