But the frontier is not only for preserving identities, is also an element that ensures the safety of us against the others. Human beings have lived and continuously live with the idea of fear. Fear of death, fear of the disappearance, fear of being forgotten. The boundaries are responsible for mitigating this uncertainty to the certainty that beyond the borders what exists is a dangerous place for us. Based on the idea of permanence, it is intended to formalize the collective manifestation of fear, that is, the unknovvn, the foreign. All devices of the frontier are designed to mitigate but not to eliminate it. This is not possible because the Solutions offered are not possible for the global problems they present. In the current world in which everyone can be accused of terrorism, the borders betvveen States are not enough to reduce this feeling of insecurity. Novadays these frontiers are everyvvhere: at airport check points, in shopping malls, in surveillance cameras installed in many locations in the city of İstanbul, in the vvalls separating the gated community projects from the rest of the city, etc...
Thus, the border (and the frontier) defines and also proteets. And it is everyvvhere, both physically and psychologically.
The aim of this project vvill consist in to establish some types of frontiers or boundary situations deteeted in İstanbul, vvithout attempting to make a thorough analysis of ali possible types. Rather it is an attempt to define the city from the vievvpoint of the liauid, the fluetuation; and to shovv how the boundaries also affect people's lives and
